Honoring Nikki Walker: Advancing Asthma Awareness

The Nikki Walker Asthma Memorial Lecture is a dedicated educational event focused on honoring the life of Nikki Walker by increasing awareness, advancing knowledge, and understanding the impact of asthma on Black and marginalized communities. This event will have a renowned Pulmonologist and staunch advocate for managing Asthma in the Black community, Dr. Jackie Hayes, and community members living with Asthma to discuss their experiences, prevention strategies, and equitable access to treatment. We do this in honor of Nikki Walker, so there will not be another loss to our community from this respiratory disease.

Dr. Jackie Allen Hayes is a native of Mississippi and currently resides in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Hayes is a graduate of Alcorn State University and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He has been practicing pulmonary and critical care medicine for more than 30 years.

Dr. Hayes retired from the United States Army after servicing 21 years. During his military career, Dr. Hayes has served in numerous positions to include Director or Respiratory Therapy, Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit, Medical Director of the U.S. Army School of Respiratory Therapy, Chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Service, Deputy Commander of the 115th Field Hospital, and Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General for Pulmonary Medicine.

Dr. Hayes is currently an attending physician at Brooke Army Medical Center and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. In his current position, Dr. Hayes educates and mentors medical students and young physicians in residency and fellowship training. He is actively involved in his community and is a member of several community and professional organizations. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Hayes has received several professional awards to include the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium Professionalism Award, the Pulmonary Fellow Teaching Award, the U.S. Army “A” Designator for Excellence in medicine, and the Order of Military Medical Merit. He was also the recipient of several military awards to include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with 5 oak leaf clusters, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Dr. Hayes is married to Michelle Hayes and they have three children and seven grandchildren.
