About this Event
In this hands-on homeschool blacksmithing class, students will learn traditional forging techniques while creating a functional and beautiful Shepherd’s Hook from 1/2" round steel bar. This project is perfect for beginners and offers a great introduction to working with hot steel, hand tools, and the fundamentals of blacksmithing.
Each student will leave with a completed Shepherd’s Hook they can use for hanging plants, lanterns, signs, or garden décor.
Students will learn:
- Forge safety and proper shop etiquette
- How to heat steel in a gas forge
- Hammer control and body mechanics
- Tapering and drawing out steel
- Use of Bending Jigs
- Creating decorative scrolls
- Basic finishing techniques
This class is designed not only to teach metalworking skills, but also to build:
- Confidence
- Focus and patience
- Problem-solving skills
- Pride in craftsmanship
- Respect for tools and materials
All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided. No prior experience is required.
Outcome: Each student will forge and take home a finished Shepherd’s Hook
