Homeschool Event: Otter Trawls and Turtle Nests
About this Event
Each student will complete the activities offered for their denoted age group. Please make sure you have registered accordingly for the age requirement.
5-9 years old: Sea Turtle Research
Sea turtles are some of the most fascinating animals in our ocean! Students will discover the four species found in South Carolina, learn about their incredible life cycle, and explore the challenges they face from predators and plastic pollution. We’ll also share how scientists and volunteers work together to protect nesting beaches and rescue stranded turtles.
10-18 years old: Discovery Vessel Program
Students will go out into the estuary on our education vessel and collect water quality data and sample marine organisms that are collected by a trawl net. They will learn about adaptations of the organisms caught, about local conservation issues, and benefits of the estuary while developing critical science investigation skills.
Students will have first priority for space on the boat. Chaperones may only attend if space allows.
