????? ??? ??????????:
A fateful day in 1994 remains etched into the memory of Manbo Key, when he discovered his father’s self-made tape collection titled Homepleasure, revealing numerous recorded sexual encounters with unknown men in their family home in a conservative village in Taiwan. While coming to terms with his own queer identity, Manbo’s father passed down his collection to him which has since evolved into the award-winning ongoing series Father’s Videotapes juxtaposing recollections and subtle exposures of his father’s secret letters, sex tapes, and objects with Manbo’s own contemporary portrayals of Taiwan as a burgeoning queer haven, especially since it became the first nation in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019.
From the club scene to the fashion industry and the art world, Manbo Key has over the years become a unifying figure in Taipei through his impactful artistic practice and the art collective Homopleasure, fostering discussions and creating spaces around sexuality and gender, all aimed at achieving more liberated and inclusive futures. In Homepleasure–Homopleasure, Manbo presents a complex narrative of intergenerational queerness that bridges his father’s bedroom and the seductive nightlife of Taipei, depicted through a selection of works by Homopleasure members, collectively expressing a place that both binds them together and sets them free.
The exhibition is supported by S. C. Van Fonden, Statens Kunstfond and The National Culture and Arts Foundation Taiwan
????? ??? ???????????:
The hybrid identity of Taiwan is its unique quality, but it is the same complexity that also poses a string of challenges for the largely unrecognised nation-state and its meeting with the international art scene. Concurrently, a storm of geopolitical tension brews over the island, which further overshadows important nuances. In the midst of the eye, a generation of trailblazing artists navigates the art scene that mirrors the dynamics and multifariousness of an island nation in flux, superseding cultural barriers, carving out interstice, and maintaining the continuous progression of identity.
To grasp some of these powerful whirlwinds, Tofu Collective and Taipei-based publishing house dmp editions has followed a diverse array of exceptional artists into the epicentre of Taiwan’s contemporary art scene. Typhoon – In the Eye of Taiwan’s New Artistic Whirlwinds airs an eclectic capture of the streams that flow, intersect, and diverge within the many layers of Taiwanese art circles, through diverse portrayals of both promising younger artists and heavyweight practitioners. From inside and outside perspectives, we move through the sheer depth and variety of identities, fluctuating between an abundance of dichotomies, between local and global, natural and artificial, body and mind, past and future.
The publication is realised with generous support by S. C. Van Fonden, Ny Carlsbergfondet and Grosserer L. F. Foghts Fond.
