This spring’s musical offering will celebrate our homeland as the United States observes its 250th anniversary this year. Our wish is that Homeland: Voices of Our American Journey will provide sounds and poetry that will bring you back home, whether to a physical place, to a beloved person, or to an experience that made you feel completely yourself. A highlight of this concert will be the performance of a new class of Choral Scholars. In the first half of the program, each composer has carefully curated poetry that is descriptive of home in the most expansive and thought-provoking ways. While this concert is not a “patriotic” program in the traditional sense, we hope it will leave you celebrating your families, your roots, and your own unique American story.
The second portion of our concert will celebrate musical styles that are quintessentially American: African American spirituals, music of Stephen Foster, and music from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s in the Great American Songbook. You will likely be familiar with selections such as Moses Hogan’s setting of “The Battle of Jericho” and George and Ira Gershwin’s jazz standard, “I Got Rhythm.” We will also treat you to a fantastic rendering of “My Old Kentucky Home.”
Plan to come and bring friends with you. This is a concert you do not want to miss!
