Home Sweet Home - Open rehearsals of a new play at Mayflower Studios
About this Event
Join us for an open rehearsal of Home Sweet Home, a savage satirical comedy exploring housing inequality, class and belonging.
Whether you’re an actor, theatre-maker, student, member of a local drama group - we’d love you to join us.
There are only 6 places available per morning and afternoon session.
Through scene work, discussion, improvisation and creative exploration, you’ll see ideas tested in real time and contribute ideas and reflections as the work evolves.
Led by theatre practitioner Charmaine K, writer Lyn O’Donnell and three professional actors, this session offers a rare opportunity to step inside the creative process
You are welcome to observe, participate or engage as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
We are in residence for four days - 15th - 18th June
Attendance is flexible—you are welcome to come for the morning session, the afternoon session, or the full day.
With grateful thanks to the MAST Theatre Jill Lowe funding Award, who have made this residency possible.
About the Project
Home Sweet Home is a new play in development by Lyn O’Donnell exploring housing inequality, class and belonging through dark comedy, satire and emotionally grounded storytelling.
Inspired by lived experience, the play examines housing affordability, insecurity and the growing social divisions that emerge when secure housing becomes increasingly out of reach.
Told through flawed, complex characters whose lives are both comic and poignant, Home Sweet Home combines savage satire with warmth and humanity, ultimately encouraging audiences to confront uncomfortable realities around housing inequality, class and belonging.
The work explores how housing insecurity affects individuals and communities, challenging assumptions about housing and economic inequality, and social cohesion, while centring humanity, resilience and care.
Our story so far ....
Over the last three years Home Sweet Home has developed from a first draft on a City Lit playwriting programme into a work shaped through residencies and script readings. Two abridged festival performances in 2025 have shown how much the story resonates with audiences and deepened its relevance.
Bafta winning playwright John Foster is mentoring on script development and our project partners include Arts University Bournemouth, Shelter, BCP, YMCA and Unite the Union.
