The audition for 'Home, I'm Darling'.

Show dates: Tuesday 16th – Saturday 20th February 2027
Judy and Johnny are living the 1950s dream, but behind the gingham curtains, things aren’t quite what they seem. After all, every marriage needs a little fantasy. In this Olivier Award-winning comedy, Laura Wade shows us a couple with a unique solution to dealing with the pressures of the world.
It’s very funny, a little sad, and surprisingly believable.
First produced by the National Theatre and following a West End run and national tour.

Character Descriptions (ages given are for guidance)

Judy – 38. Judy is the central character of the play and is on stage the whole time. She has to be able to jive, or be willing to learn! The role requires a degree of intimacy with Johnny and Marcus.
Johnny – 37. Judy’s husband. Needs to able to jive, but not that well. Intimacy with Judy.
Fran – 35. Judy’s friend. The role requires a degree of intimacy with Marcus.
Marcus – 43. Fran’s husband. Needs to be able to jive quite well. Intimacy with Judy and Fran.
Sylvia – 67. Judy’s mother.
Alex (F) – 30. Johnny’s boss.
This a dark comedy where the characters navigate the complex intersection of modern 21st Century
pressures and an idealised retro 1950’s lifestyle.
Dancing
Marcus needs to be a good dancer. Judy needs to be a competent dancer. Johnny needs to be willing to have a go. We have a choreographer who will work closely with the cast. We will do a bit of fun dancing with everyone at the launch/workshop as a warm-up.
There is also an opportunity for competent dancers to get involved in the show as dancing scene changers. You will wear a costume and help clear and set props in a choreographed way to 50’s music.
There will be no heavy lifting. This is a fun opportunity for anyone who wants to be part of the show but don’t want to audition.
Language
The play contains strong language.
Intimacy
The play contains intimacy between Fran and her husband Marcus, between Judy and her husband Johnny, and between Judy and Marcus. Any scenes containing intimacy will be carefully
choreographed ensuring all actors involved are comfortable each time they rehearse. We will be
following the guidelines of the Independent Theatre Organisation which can be seen in full here

It is essential that people auditioning for parts read the whole script before audition to see what is required as we will not be reading the whole play at the launch event/workshop. An online copy is available here.
