Join us for an afternoon of brass rubbing and hands-on history. Create your own rubbings using our replica church brasses and explore a selection of genuine and replica medieval artefacts. Specialist wax crayons, sketching pencils and paper will be provided.
This workshop is suitable for home-educated young people aged 12 to 16. Accompanying adults are welcome to take part in the brass rubbing activity too. If you would like to create your own rubbing, please book an adult ticket.
What is brass rubbing?
Once a popular pastime, brass rubbing involves creating an impression of an engraved brass memorial using paper and wax crayons. These decorative brass plaques can be found in many churches, most often set into the floor, although some are mounted on walls. They typically date from the 13th to the 16th centuries and often commemorate notable individuals from the period.
