Together we will light candles of remembrance, standing in solidarity against both the historic and present-day genocidal actions inflicted on Ukraine by russia.
In 1932-1933, the totalitarian communist regime committed the crime of genocide against the Ukrainian people. The Holodomor (death by starvation) was carried out on Soviet dictator Stalin’s orders, by the leadership of the communist party and government of the USSR in 1932-1933, who organised the artificial famine that caused the deaths of millions of Ukrainians in rural areas of the Ukrainian SSR, and in Kuban (Northern Caucasus, modern-day Russia), where the vast majority of the population was Ukrainian. Ukraine lost millions of human lives to the genocide of 1932-1933 and to other man-made famines in 1921-1923 and 1946-1947. In 2006, the definition of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people was enshrined in the Laws of Ukraine, since then over 30 countries globally have officially recognised it as genocide against the Ukrainian People. Ukraine remembers- the world recognises.
The Holodomor Remembrance event serves as a solemn reminder of the millions of Ukrainians who perished in the man-made famine orchestrated under Soviet dictator Stalin in 1932-33, a crime that nearly erased an entire people. Today, its successor, putin’s rashist regime continues this brutal legacy, using similar tactics to erase Ukrainian identity, culture, and life.

As in 1932-1933, Russia is trying to break the Ukrainian people’s will to resist today, and throwing its entire terrorist arsenal against us. Like Stalin in the twentieth century, Putin chose to commit genocide in the twenty-first because other methods of subjugating the Ukrainian people had not worked. To organise his genocide, Stalin resorted to confiscation of food, blockades, and increased political terror. Putin chose to go the route of full-scale military invasion, following it promptly with terror, mass murder, deliberate attacks on bomb shelters, evacuation routes, and humanitarian corridors; the bombing of residential areas, sexual violence, military sieges, and deportations (forced displacement of Ukrainians, including children) in his rendition of genocide.
Just as it did 91 years ago, Moscow has used its networks of media and agents of influence to launch large-scale disinformation and propaganda campaigns to cover up their crimes, and to encourage Russian audiences to commit, or at least support the committal of wartime atrocities. Both then and now, Russia is counting on the prevalence of indifference in the world, and on the world’s fear of its might, as it tries to create a parallel reality, far from the real world.
Through remembrance, we unite to oppose all forms of tyranny including the use of food as a weapon, from Stalin’s famine to today’s blockade of grain exports intended to destabilise the world.
Ukrainian Communities around the world call on all democratic nations, including New Zealand, to:
- Recognise the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people (for those who haven’t yet - including NZ)
- Hold commemorative sessions or hearings condemning russia's aggression against Ukraine (for countries that have already recognised the Holodomor)
We join their call and stand in solidarity! Together we will light a candle of remembrance and shine a light on russia's historical and present-day atrocities once again!
This 91st anniversary reminds us that the memory of past atrocities empowers the present and future, inspiring action to prevent further suffering.
