About this Event
We invite you to commemorate the tragic events of the past by attending a program organized by the Ukrainian community, Cambridge4Ukraine, in remembrance of the 1932–1933 famine in Ukraine (the Holodomor).
The event will feature a screening of Mr. Jones (Ціна Правди). Alongside the film, participants can attend a candle-making workshop, Let’s Light a Candle of Memory, to create candles as symbols of solidarity and remembrance.
Holodomor Remembrance Day Program:
3:30 pm – Opening Remarks by Organizers: Holodomor: Destruction of Identity
4:00 pm – Candle-Making Workshop: Let’s Light a Candle of Memory, led by Ukrainian craftswoman Yaroslava Levchuk. Participants will craft and light candles in the Ukrainian tradition of placing them on windowsills to honor those lost. All are invited to join in a Moment of Silence on November 23 to remember the millions who perished in the Holodomor (1932–1933) and other man-made famines (1921–1923 and 1946–1947).
4:30 pm - 6:30 pm – Screening of the film Mr. Jones (Language: Ukrainian). This film tells the story of Gareth Jones, the courageous Welsh journalist and Cambridge University graduate who sought to expose the horrors of the Soviet Union to the world. Directed by Agnieszka Holland, this historical thriller sheds light on propaganda and hidden truths. Though tragic, the film prompts viewers not to cry but to reconsider their understanding of history and truth. Mr. Jones premiered globally on February 10, 2019.
As tragic events unfold today, this commemoration emphasizes the importance of living memory. Those who commit crimes against humanity must be condemned, and victims must be honored. Heroes like Gareth Jones serve as examples to us all.
This event offers a chance to reflect on the role of propaganda and truth, harsh reality, and the industry of fake constructs that the world once believed in—and perhaps still does—because facing the truth is often difficult.
