Holland Park Sinfonia: Rachmaninoff - Barber - Puccini
About this Event
After a successful inaugral concert in February, the Holland Park Sinfonia is back at St Peter's Notting Hill, performing-
- Preludio Sinfonico - Giacomo Puccini
- Violin Concerto - Samuel Barber
- Symphony no. 2 - Rachmaninoff
Puccini's Preludio Sinfonico, which he wrote when he was 23 and studying at Milan Conservatoire. It shows lyrical style of writing and orchestration, his hold on melodic sense and immediately teases the listener that Puccini would go on to write operas.
Barber's glorious violin concerto, with beautiful first two movements of soaring melodies and harmony and rythmn and an almost impossible 3rd movement, feared by orchestras, conductors and soloists, performed by star violinist Charlie Lovell- Jones, Classic FM Rising Star 2026 and concertmaster of the virtuosic Sinfonia of London.
And finally, Rachmaninoff's most popular Second symphony, full of sweeping emotion and grandiose. His comeback as a symphonist after the failed performance of the first one, resulting in him losing his confidence. This symphony ended up being one of the most iconic pieces of work in classical music, notably the famous Adagio movement.
