Ages 9-13We will be conjuring up a magical portal for you to step into! What will you see and what stories will you find? Could you stumble into a world of mischief and mayhem where faeries like to misbehave? Or discover a long lost power that only you (or your character) can wield?
This workshop is for any writing level. This is a part of Shelley’s ethos: writing is here to serve everyone and in ways they haven’t even realised yet!
Workshop outcomes: Discover your ability for world building — a big part of being a writer is the ability to create worlds in detail; write quirky little spells and curses with or without rhyme; building characters; write 2-3 pieces of Flow Writing; team collaboration.
Wellbeing outcomes: use imagination to create solutions; increased confidence to use your voice in words and out loud; understand emotions and how to feel more comfortable with them; fun and laughter!
What to bring: a laptop or journal. I’ll also have paper and pens

Hi! I’m Shelley...
I love writing, but I love guiding people to unleash their writing superpowers even more. I used to be pretty quiet when I was younger. I felt scared of the world a lot and didn’t like people to see my writing. But now I do! I love creating fantastical worlds, conjuring poems, and writing books that help other people. Do you love writing, too? Wanna come and have heaps of fun while you learn more about it?
Once upon a time...
I was a youth worker. I created lots of fun things for young people to do. Then I became a journalist, a newspaper editor, and a magazine deputy-editor. These days, I teach at the School for Young Writers in Christchurch, and hold online writing and wellbeing courses for young people and adults from across the world.
Storytellers School is for...
young people who love to write, create imaginary worlds, and discover their own wisdom. Everyone has a superpower and in my workshops you get to discover what yours is in writing! It’s okay if you feel a bit uncertain — I feel uncomfortable trying new things, too. But once I’m there, I find I love it! My workshops are filled with music, laughter, and mischief! I work alongside you to find out what you love to do, and help build up your confidence and self-belief.
