About this Event
Induction to sociable, fun & eco inspired pottery workshops
If you have always wanted to have a go at throwing on a pottery wheel but don't know where to begin, then Hobby Potter Sundays might be just the thing. In the induction I guide you through the basics. Then, by becoming a regular, you get to really hone your skills. Or, if you're a seasoned potter and fancy bringing what you already know to the table, please do not hold back. Whatever your experience, sitting around a table and throwing pots on our colourful Small Ceramics wheels is a delightful ice-breaker and a great way to create, throw and play with clay.
This event is:
- Suitable for complete beginners as well as seasoned potters. In fact, having a diverse mix of folks around the same table makes for the best experience for all.
- A 2 hour, hands on clay, throwing session. I do the clean up.
- All materials and equipment provided, except aprons and hair ties!
- Small groups: a maximum of 6.
This is your induction. You will learn what you need to get going. After this induction and if you want more, stay in touch. Hobby Potter Sundays are held regulary but not every Sunday. Sunday Hobby Potter regulars, who have done this induction, get:
- early notice on dates and first dibs on places
- a 35% discount, making the throwing sessions only £9.10 per hour!
- and to connect with and learn alongside other regular Sunday Hobby Potters.
Optional Additional Costs
£10 for each pot to be fired.
NB. There is no charge for all the clay you will get through while practising. So, relax into the learning process, take risks and take your time deciding which (indeed, if any!) pots to fire.
Your £10 does not just cover material and kiln costs. Unless you join us for a Trimming & Finishing sesson (such as that which is offered at Wednesday's Clay Club) and depending on the quality of your make, I may need to do the following for your pot to survive a firing: recompress the base, clean off slip, wet trim excess clay and turn a foot ring.
What to expect
- The perfect venue for a Sunday get together: The Garden Room at The Exchange Bar, which is open from 12 till 8 PM so come early and/or linger on.
- A potters table set with 6 Small Ceramics pottery wheels. Some take a maximum of 350g weight of clay, which is enough for a cup. Some take a maximun of 500g weight of clay, which is enough for a bowl.
- Instruction if you want it. I break down the whole throwing process into 4 steps: centering, opening out, raising the walls, shaping and finishing. Although, if it were that easy, it’d be no fun!
- Individual help is at hand throughout.
If you’ve never thrown before, just focus on getting a feel for it. The best approach is to get stuck in, get into the zone, chase your flow state, laugh at the funny bits and let the magic in.
We use Small Ceramics wheels because their stability and geared motors make for an authentic throwing experience. The torque is such that the wheel remains steady when you most need it to be. In fact, the Small Ceramics wheels are so good that the skills, approaches and principles that I demonstrate on them can be directly transferred to throwing bigger.
