We'll celebrate May Lee's Hmong herbal odyssey and the Hmong herbal traditions her family has cultivated in the Twin Cities Hmong community for 40 years. Located at Farm at the Arb, this special gathering will have tours of the Gallery Garden's new exhibit "Seeds of Knowledge & Healing" exhibit, plus Hmong food, art and a vendor market.
May Lee and her daughters, Zongxee and Mhonpaj, will share stories and tours of the garden, which Zongxee co-created in partnership with the Arboretum. It includes 12 herbs used in the family’s healing Hmong chicken soup, used for postpartum care, but also ornamental flowers. Among the plants are six key herbs Zongxee says are essential to traditional Hmong chicken soup, including red dye, flick plant, lemongrass, fat green medicine, rough edge leaf and red duck feet.
Work is ongoing with May, Zongxee, Mhonpaj and the University of Minnesota to scientifically document the herbs so the verbal traditionals that have kept the herbs alive aren’t lost to future generations. One section of the garden includes labels for important plants with common (English), Hmong and botanical (Latin) names.
Colorful flowers such as poppies, cosmos, celosia, red canna and balsam flower create a backdrop for the beautiful herb foliage, along with bitter melon (Momordica charantia), upland rice (Oryza sativa), red corn (Zia mays) and many others chosen by Zongxee.
For this event, visitors can enter the Arboretum at the Farm at the Arb entrance gate between 11 a.m.-3 p.m. or the main entrance. Have your admission ticket ready to scan at either entrance.
Please note that visitors coming from the west of the Arboretum will need to take a detour Aug. 12-18 to reach the main entrance due to a Highway 5 closure.
