What’s your ideal hit man? Maybe you like an up-for-anything daredevil, or a taciturn European? If you ask us, we like ours to be of the Glen Powell persuasion, preferably directed by the legendary Richard Linklater (SCHOOL OF ROCK, A SCANNER DARKLY). Whatever it is, that fantasy is at the core of HIT MAN, a slick, snappy, and charming action comedy (somewhat) based on the true story of fake hit man/real undercover agent Gary Johnson. He spends his days entrapping would-be clients and his nights at home with his two cats. That’s all turned upside down when he gets wrapped up in a woman’s (Adria Arjona) plan to have her abusive husband killed, falling for the very trap he’s set countless times before.
We’ve always had a soft spot for the Austin-based Linklater, and HIT MAN is up there with his best (which is very serious praise). The script he co-wrote with Powell and Skip Hollandsworth (author of the original Gary Johnson article) makes for perfect popcorn cinema. It’s the kind of movie you can watch on Friday night, and then throw it on again on Sunday afternoon and have just as much fun as the first time. Powell and Arjona’s chemistry is electrifying, both performing a sultry dance as the deception at the center of their romance sends Gary Johnson further and further down a dizzying identity crisis.
