About this Event

This historical storytelling follows a series of related events from 1807 to 1819; The Peninsular War, the mechanisation of industry, the combination laws, the Luddite rebellions, and finally the terrible impact of the hated Corn Laws on the working people of Britain and Ireland. All of this led to the Reform Meeting at St Peters Field in Manchester and the resulting massacre by yeoman cavalry, militias and special constables on peaceful demonstrators.

Their story is told in song and poetry by folk singer and historian, Ken Scally. The image of the massacre by George Cruikshank, September 1819 People's History Museum.

This talk is part of the Wellies, Walks and Talks programme, made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players and Healthy Arts.
