📆 Wednesday 11th November 2026
🕒 6PM – 7:15PM
🎟️ Free to attend (booking required)
On 26 April 1945, RAF Lancaster PD339 of No. 50 Squadron crashed near Delapré Home Farm as it returned to its base in Lincolnshire. The aircraft and crew were on the final stage of their journey after taking part in Operation Exodus, the repatriation of Allied prisoners of war following their liberation.
This fascinating and moving talk explores the events leading up to the tragic crash, which occurred just one day after the end of Bomber Command’s bombing operations in Europe. It commemorates the courage and sacrifice of the crew of Lancaster PD339 and pays tribute to all those who served in Bomber Command during the Second World War.
The talk will be presented by Roger and Bill, volunteer historians at Delapré Abbey, who have spent many years researching this event. Through their dedication, they have developed a deep understanding of the crash, built close relationships with the descendants of those connected to the tragedy, and helped ensure that the story of Lancaster PD339 continues to be remembered. Their research and fundraising efforts also led to the installation of two memorial benches within the grounds of Delapré Abbey. One stands close to the crash site in honour of the fallen airmen, providing a lasting place of reflection and remembrance for visitors and relatives alike. Together, these memorials serve as a fitting tribute to the crew and the sacrifice they made in the closing days of the war.
