History Surrounds - Augmented Reality Experience and Entertainment
Overview
History Surrounds brings the history of Austin's Wooldridge Square to life through a site-specific augmented reality experience, historical storytelling, oral histories, live music, and community programming.
The project launches with a special public picnic and live music event at Wooldridge Square on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy live musical performances, participate in the picnic atmosphere, meet community partners, and experience the new augmented reality interpretation of the park and its history.
Visitors will be invited to explore Wooldridge Square through their mobile devices and discover stories connected to the people, places, and events that shaped this historic site. The augmented reality experience brings together archival materials, historical research, digital reconstructions, 3D historical figures, audio storytelling, and interactive experiences that connect Austin's past with the landscape visitors see today.
The experience explores several important chapters in Wooldridge Square's history, including the history of African American churches and Block 101, Austin's Women's Suffrage movement, and the city's early music culture—including Wooldridge Square's connection to the origins of Austin's iconic armadillo identity.
History Surrounds also incorporates newly recorded oral histories and conversations with historians, descendants, clergy, and community members, helping preserve stories that might otherwise be lost while adding contemporary voices to Austin's historical record.
Official docent-led programming will take place every Saturday throughout October and November, giving visitors an opportunity to experience the site with members of the project team who can help guide them through the historical stories and augmented reality experience.
The experience will continue beyond the scheduled docent programming, allowing visitors to explore History Surrounds on their own. Molly, our programmable digital docent, will help guide future visitors through the stories and points of interest at Wooldridge Square.
