About this Event
Long before tarot became the darling of modern fortune tellers, the cards lived many lives.
They began as lavish entertainment for the Italian nobility, passed through the hands of mystics, occultists, artists, priests (really), and revolutionaries, slowly transforming into the symbolic we know today.Join folklorist and storyteller Rissa Miller for a lively journey through centuries of tarot evolution, to learn the stories tucked between the cards.
Guests will discover how tarot traveled from Renaissance courts to Victorian séances, how esoteric orders reshaped the imagery, and how pop culture helped bring the cards into the mainstream. Along the way, explore the shifting meanings, the artists who changed tarot forever, and why these cards continue to resonate so deeply across generations.
Whether you're a seasoned reader, art lover, or simply tarot-curious, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of tarot’s tangled, fascinating past and a renewed appreciation for the 78 card-deck you hold in your hands.
Please note, this is a lecture held indoors at The 9 Collective. There will be no outdoor component. The focus of this class will be tarot history; guests can examine vintage decks, but there is no workshop component. While it is all-ages friendly, it may be of greatest interest to guests with curiosity about tarot or its place in history. The 9 Collective is ADA accessible and has a free parking lot.
