About this Event
Discover the history of insurance on the streets of the City of London: not only the big three marine, life and fire insurance, but other insurances that branched from them. Hear about the pivotal role of the Royal Exchange and the coffee houses, where trading took place.
The City of London has long been a hub for international trade and insurance, with its history reflected in the street plans and buildings. The Insurance Museum's tour explores the origins of London trade and the parallel development of insurance. It covers Roman life insurance, medieval maritime insurance, Italian bankers, gamblers, visionaries, and what “my word is my bond” really means. All this happens in a small area between the Royal Exchange and Lloyd’s of London – EC3, in the place simply known around the world as “The City”.
The tour will be led by professional tour guide Pete Zymanczyk.
For insurance professionals, the tour offers Unstructured CPD with the following learning objectives:
- Gain an understanding and knowledge of insurance history.
- Learn how a museum can engage the public, young people, and children with insurance.
The tour is free, but we will ask participants to make a donation to the Insurance Museum, which is a UK registered charity (Charity no. 1188138).
