How society dealt withoffenders from Norman times to the 21st century.
About this Event

Built in 1853, today the role of the Victorian building on New North Road known as Her Majesty’s Pr*son Exeter, is to serve the Courts of the south-west counties as a Remand Centre and Local Pr*son for short-term offences. The photograph was taken in the 1920s.

This extensive building, which dominates the view from Exeter’s Rougemont Castle and gardens across the valley and Queen Street railway station, is the sole remaining Pr*son from the six that previously fulfilled the role of holding felons, debtors and petty criminals in Exeter.

The separate establishments used to house those offenders are part of the history of imprisonment in this country, and the means that society chose to deal with men and women who committed, or were alleged to have committed, offences of all categories from the Normans to the Elizabethans of this twenty-first century. This event is free to members although there is a small (3) charge for non members who are most welcome.
