SEPTEMBER TOPIC: Agrigento 582 BCE - 2025 CE - The Giant Awakens! Join us for a captivating journey through the illustrious history of Agrigento, a city founded by ancient Greek settlers in 582 BCE and set to become the Italian Capital of Culture in 2025. Originally known as Akragas, Agrigento quickly flourished into a major Greek city, renowned for its wealth, powerful fleet, and stunning architecture, including the grand Temple of Zeus with its colossal Telamon statue. This ancient guardian, recently restored, symbolizes Agrigento's enduring legacy and cultural renaissance. Throughout the ages, Agrigento has been a pivotal city, blending its rich Greek heritage with Roman grandeur during the Roman Empire, transforming into a center of Norman power in the Middle Ages, and showcasing Baroque brilliance in its architecture. The 19th and 20th centuries saw Agrigento modernize and witnessing the unification of Italy and the two World Wars.
