Learn about the archeological and historical investigations at the Tom Cook Blacksmith Shop, located in Bolivar, in northwest Denton County along the Chisholm Trail.
The story of Tom and Lethia Cook and their descendants is an important addition to the story of African American heritage in Denton County.
The talk is presented by archeologist Douglas Boyd and UT Austin anthropologist and oral history professor Maria Franklin, Ph.D.
This program, during Texas Archeology Month, is sponsored by the Denton County Historical Commission.
About the Speakers:
Douglas Boyd is co-principal investigator for the Bolivar Archeological Project. During the excavations artifacts were recovered from Tom Cook’s blacksmith shop.
Dr. Maria Franklin is an associate professor at the University of Texas and a consultant for the Bolivar Project. She directs oral history and outreach with the Denton County African American community.
