Discover the story of Pullman through the eyes of the workers who built the town, the railroad industry, and a movement for change. While entrepreneur George Pullman became a symbol of luxury and innovation with his opulent sleeping cars and exacting standards, the reality for his workforce wasn't always ideal.

By the early1890's, Pullman’s “model town” was cracking. Although the town offered attractive homes, a school, church, a library, and a convenient marketplace, the Pullman company regulated nearly every aspect of life.

Workers faced high rents, strict rules, and little say in their own lives. Democracy had little place in George Pullman’s vision.

When a serious reccession hit the country, the workers rose up, demanding fairness and dignity. Their strike became a turning point in American labor history, leading to a nationwide railroad shutdown that highlighted the growing tensions between labor and corporate power. Though Pullman ignored their pleas, the courage and unity of the workers left an indelible mark on the labor movement and reshaped the national conversation about workers’ rights.

Co-sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society and the Historic Pullman Foundation, this tour tells the story of the people who fought for justice in a system stacked against them. Hear an unforgettable story of struggle, resilience, and the fight for a better future for all. Come walk the hallowed ground where the power of collective action took hold and transformed America.
