Thanks to Women in History Ohio, a nonprofit that educates through dramatic portrayals of notable women, we will be visited by Florence Nightingale, portrayed by Linda Palko Witkowski. This Historic Portrayal will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 in Orchestra Hall. Please note this replaces the originally scheduled Historic Portrayal of Loretta Lynn. Florence Nightingale, a British aristocrat turned social reformer, is recognized as the founder of modern nursing. She gained fame during the Crimean War for leading a team of nurses and caring for wounded soldiers.
Her efforts elevated the status of the nursing profession and made her a cultural icon of the Victorian era – second in fame only to Queen Victoria. Nightingale was not only a nurse, but also a pioneering administrator, statistician and early feminist.
Portrayer Witkowski holds a master’s degree in modern language and literature from Case Western Reserve University. She’s now retired, having spent 50 years in the computer technology field, witnessing the emergence of this fascinating industry.
She has performed at area theatres for a few years and enjoys partnering with Cuyahoga Community College and Baldwin Wallace University. She teaches in their Encore 55 and Institute for Learning in Retirement programs, focusing on biographies, women’s suffrage and information technology.
In 2019, she took over the leadership of Women in History Ohio.
