About this Event
On Saturday November 1st, join The Jaxson’s Mike Field for a guided walking tour of Ortega, one of Jacksonville’s most enduring historic neighborhoods.Mike had lived in the neighborhood for more than a decade and offers both a historian's and insider's perspective of the area.
What started as a haven for a notorious pirate and his gang of thieves, was later developed by John N. C. Stockton and Charles C. Bettes and designed by prominent local architect Henry Klutho into one of Jacksonville's most prominant neighborhoods. Although the thieves and gangsters haven't completed left.
The Old Ortega Historic District is a Jacksonville neighborhood that represents an early manifestation of the City Beautiful Movement, a progressive architectural and urban planning movement centered around the intent of introducing beautification and monumental grandeur in cities across the country.
It contains a wide variety of residential architectural styles including Frame and Masonry Vernacular, Mission, Craftsman Bungalow, Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, Minimal Traditional, Tudor Revival, and Prairie. Old Ortega was designated as a historic district and added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 2004.
Together we'll explore the neighborhood's past, present and future. There are two tours to choose from. One leaves at 9am and the other at Noon. Both tours feature a leisurely walking pace.
