Hey friends, we have a couple of exciting Historic Highway Tunnel Hikes (or bike) planned for Saturday September 13th. Hike # 1 - 10:00 AM Mitchell Point Tunnels. After four years of construction, the 655-foot long tunnel is now open and available for non-vehicle users to hike on this lest than 1 mile segment of the Historic State Trail. The new tunnel includes five arched windows with expansive views of the Columbia River along with a hand placed stone masonry wall on the trail. The views are amazing!
Getting there: The Mitchell Point Tunnel is only accessible from I-84 eastbound Exit 58. There is no access from westbound I-84. From Hood River, use the Exit 56 interchange to turnaround and head east to Exit 58.
Hike or Bike # 2 - 11:00 AM in Moiser at the Mark Hatfield East Trailhead. The Mosier Twin Tunnels Trail is a scenic paved pathway in the Columbia River Gorge, offering stunning views, historical significance, and accessibility for hikers and bikers alike. For those that choose to hike, we will hike the 3-mile round trip through the Twin Tunnels and back. Those of you that choose to bike this trail can bike up to 9 miles round trip from the Moiser Mark Hatfield East trailhead to the Hood River West trailhead and back.
Getting there: From Portland, take I-84 East to the Mosier exit #69. Turn right at the end of the freeway offramp. The road curves toward the left toward the town of Mosier. At the base of the bridge turn left and circle under the bridge. Drive about one mile to the trailhead parking lot on the left. $10.00 parking or Oregon State Parking Pass required.
Lunch: At the conclusion of both hikes join us for a lunch at Grassland BBQ in Hood River. They claim bragging rights to the best BBQ in the PNW. The lines to this food truck support their claim. I just went and they were well worth the wait. If you are short on time or just not in the mood for BBQ. This waterfront park has two other food trucks to choose from.
Getting there: Grassland BBQ 403 Portway Ave Hood River Oregon 97031
Bikes are allowed at the Mitchel Point Tunnel, but because of the short length, if you are bringing your bike, save the biking for the Moiser Twin Tunnel trail. Whether you are hiking or biking, please come join the fun. I hope to see you all there.
