On Saturday, February 15, Hedden will lead an illuminating morning seafaring excursion presented by Key West Art & Historical Society aboard the luxury catamaran SV Argo Navis, departing from the dock at 0 Margaret Street at 10:00 a.m. and returning at 12:00 p.m.
Passengers will enjoy Bloody Marys, mimosas or non-alcoholic beverages along with lite breakfast fare as Hedden speaks about the adventures and discoveries of some of the lesser known ornithologists who visited the Keys in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Figures such as Arthur Cleveland Bent, who assembled and partially wrote the 21-volume work, Life Histories of North American Birds, the most authoritative collection of information about North American bird species of the era. Hedden will also speak about W.E.D. Scott, head of the ornithology department at Princeton University, whose reports from the Keys and the Everglades about the plume hunting industry led to public support for the protection of birds as well as the foundation of the National Audubon Society, and about Gustavus Würdemann, a somewhat mysterious figure who has a type of bird named after him that can only be found in the Florida Keys.
