Historic Doors, Hinges, and Hardware Workshop

Join us for an immersive two-day hands-on workshop dedicated to the restoration of historic doors, hinges, and hardware!

Over two days, explore traditional materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and conservation of original doors, hinges, and hardware under the guidance of a skilled instructor. Participants will gain an understanding of how to assess the condition of wooden doors; how to repair, replace, or replicate damaged woodwork; common problems interior doors face; what tools, products, and techniques can be used to repair them; and how to clean, conserve, and reinstall historic hinges and hardware. No matter what you are working on, this workshop offers practical skills and preservation insights to help you bring original architectural elements back to life.

This workshop will run over two days: Saturday, November 8th and Sunday, November 9th from 8:30am - 4:30pm. Both days will have an hour lunch and a total of 14 instructional hours.

The workshop instructor is Noel Sanchez, a restoration carpenter who is president and founder of Casa Buena Builders. Sanchez has over thirty years of experience in the construction business, and his work has twice been recognized in the Rhody Awards for Historical Preservation. Sanchez is the lead instructor of PPS's Building Works program, which includes weekend and evening workshops as well as trades training intensives in the historic building trades.

Who Should Attend/Experience Level: Home or building owners, preservation tradespeople, property managers, architects, and anyone interested in traditional building techniques and historic restoration and maintenance.

Attire: Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you’re comfortable getting dirty. Tools needed for this workshop include:

• Safety goggles
• Hammer
• Nail Remover
• Flat pry bar

All visitors should wear closed-toe, comfortable shoes and be prepared for dust, uneven floors, and navigating older, narrow stairways. There is no air conditioning or heating in the house, so visitors should also be prepared for the temperature inside to reflect the outdoor temperature that afternoon.

There is a large parking lot south of the house that is entered from Admiral Street very close to the Dunkin Donuts. This lot is located next to the playground and is about 500 feet from the house. To get to the house from the lot, walk to Admiral Street, take a right and walk up until you see a break in the fencing at the side of the house. We will gather there.
