About this Event

The Manchester Central Library and Instituto Cervantes Manchester present the Hispanic Film Club, a programme designed to celebrate the richness of Spanish-language cinema. This new series is dedicated to the acclaimed director Carlos Saura, one of the most influential figures in Spanish film, internationally recognised for his work exploring memory, identity and the relationship between art and society through a deeply personal and innovative aesthetic. Throughout his career, Saura received numerous awards and collaborated with renowned artists such as Geraldine Chaplin and Antonio Gades, leaving an indelible mark on world cinema.

The first three screenings will feature Elisa, vida mía (1977), Mamá cumple 100 años (1979) and Goya en Burdeos (1999), films that exemplify his ability to combine introspection, history and art in unique narratives. We have chosen Saura because his cinema offers a profound reflection on Spanish history and culture, perfectly aligned with the essence of the Hispanic Film Club: showcasing the diversity and depth of the Hispanic world through works that transcend borders.

Third screening: [Goya in Bordeaux] (Carlos Saura, 1999)

Synopsis: Brilliant painter Francisco de Goya, considered by many to be the most important artist of the modern era, reflects on his turbulent career and tempestuous relationships during the decline of Spain and a bloody war of independence, while living out his final days in exile.

La Biblioteca Central de Manchester y el Instituto Cervantes de Manchester presentan el Hispanic Film Club, que tiene como objetivo celebrar la riqueza del cine en español. Esta nueva serie estará dedicada al director Carlos Saura, uno de los grandes nombres del cine español, reconocido internacionalmente por una obra que explora la memoria, la identidad y la relación entre arte y sociedad con una estética innovadora y profundamente personal. A lo largo de su carrera, Saura recibió numerosos premios y trabajó con figuras como Geraldine Chaplin y Antonio Gades, dejando una huella imborrable en la cinematografía mundial.

Las tres primeras proyecciones incluirán Elisa, vida mía (1977), Mamá cumple 100 años (1979) y Goya en Burdeos (1999), películas que reflejan su capacidad para combinar introspección, historia y arte en relatos únicos. Hemos elegido a Saura porque su cine ofrece una reflexión sobre la historia y la cultura española, en diálogo con la esencia del Hispanic Film Club: mostrar la diversidad y profundidad del mundo hispano a través de obras que trascienden fronteras.

Sinopsis: A los 82 años, exiliado en Burdeos con Leocadia Zorrilla de Weiss, la última de sus amantes, el pintor Francisco de Goya reconstruye para su hija Rosario los acontecimientos que marcaron su vida. Una vida en la que se suceden convulsiones políticas, pasiones emponzoñadas y el éxtasis de la fama.
