About this Event
In India's Hindustani classical music, the repertoire of melodic ragas are composed to closely correlate with moods associated with the different times of day. A morning concert, therefore, will present repertoire that wouldn't be heard at an evening concert and vice versa.
Calcutta(Kolkata), India-based sarode player Saugata Roy Chowdhury's upcoming concerts with tabla player Andrew McLean will highlight traditional ragas from this morning repertoire, bringing their subtleties into the intimate setting of Studio Saint Philip.
Sarode is a 25-string lute with a metal, fretless fingerboard and 15 sympathetic strings tuned uniquely to each raga. It's sound is akin to a hybrid between sitar, banjo and slide guitar. Tabla is a pair of tuned hand drums that accompany the sarode with its elaborate, poetic language of syllables matching each note and phrase.
