Hindustani vocalist Shiv Prasad Rao will present traditional compositions in the ragas and gayaki styles of the Gwalior Jaipur and Agra gharanas infused with the distinctive lyrical and rhythmic improvisations of his Parampara.
He will be accompanied on the tabla by Shri Jitendra Swain and on the harmonium by Shri Vighnesh Bhagavat.
About the performers
Vocalist: Shiv Prasad Rao (Delhi)
Shiv Prasad Rao is a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist known for his deep command of the Gwalior Jaipur and Agra gharanas. Trained initially by his father Pt. Maheshwar Rao he went on to receive advanced guidance from Pt. Vikas Kashalkar of Pune. An ‘A-Grade’ artist with All India Radio and empanelled with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) he is a holder of the Sangeet Visharad and Sangeet Alankar degrees. His accolades include the Sangeet Saadhak Sangeet Ratna Guru Ravi Jain Award and Swarveni Ratna. Having performed extensively across India he also contributes as a music expert for Doordarshan Archives and teaches at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya New Delhi.
On the Tabla: Jitendra Swain (Delhi)
Jitendra Swain was trained under famous exponents of the tabla like Pt Gopinath Behera Pt Vinod Pathak and Pt Suresh Talwalkar. He obtained his Sangeet Alankar degree (M Music) from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal Mumbai in 1992. He has performed in many concerts in India under the aegis of SPIC MACAY and across the globe including the Kennedy Centre Washington DC.
Jitendra Swain has also been teaching the tabla for the past 20 years at various institutions including the Kala Vikas Kendra Cuttack Mata Kala Mandir and Sri Aurobindo Ashram New Delhi. He was also posted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Government of India to teach tabla at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Cultural Cooperation in Trinidad and Tobago. He is currently teaching at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra New Delhi. Jitendra Swain is currently a ‘B-high grade’ artist with the All India Radio and Doordarshan.
On the Harmonium: Vighnesh Bhagavat (Bengaluru)
Vighnesh Bhagavat Yellapur is a Hindustani classical vocalist and harmonium player admired for blending discipline with sensitivity in his music. He began his training under Vidwan Dattatraya Gaonkar in Yellapur and now studies with the eminent harmonium maestro Pt. Vyasamurthi Katti. A Gold Medallist in M.Music (Hindustani Vocal) from KSGH Music and Fine Arts University Mysore he also holds a B.Music degree from Karnataka Fine Arts and Music College Dharwad. Vighnesh has performed alongside senior musicians as well as contemporaries gaining recognition for his subtle accompaniment expressive vocal style and profound grasp of raga.
