Join the JSU Field School on the 1st Friday and 3rd Saturday of each month, with occasional additional dates, for guided hikes through the Little River National Preserve, exploring local plants, animals, and the natural history of the area.Join us at Canyon Mouth Park as we document birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and enjoy a guided hike along the arduous 2-mile Eberhart Point Trail. As we explore, we’ll observe local bird species and contribute valuable data to a global community science effort.
While Canyon Mouth Park typically charges a $15 per vehicle fee, admission will be free on February 16 in celebration of President’s Day.
Participants should wear sturdy hiking footwear and bring water, sun protection, and a snack if desired. Leashed dogs and children are welcome.
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) encourages people around the world to become citizen scientists by spending at least 15 minutes documenting birds using the Merlin Bird ID App from February 13–16, 2026.
Meeting Location:
Canyon Mouth Park is located off Alabama Highway 273 in Cedar Bluff, Alabama, between Highway 35 and Alabama Highway 68. Turn onto County Road 275, stay to the right, follow the road to the gate, and stop at the fee booth. This is a day-use area.
