Hike to Yoga: We Come From Somewhere | Birthday Hike + Culture Picnic
About this Event
This one is personal.
In July, I turn 40. And the way I want to celebrate is the same way I want to live: in community, in movement, on the land, with every culture represented around the table.
So this month's First Saturday looks a little different.
WHAT WE'RE DOING
We hike. We move. We breathe together.
And then — we eat.
But not just any meal. After our hike and yoga wave practice, we're spreading out a blanket and hosting a Diversity Picnic: everyone brings one dish, snack, or treat from their culture or background. That's it. That's the ticket.
There is no potluck theme. There is no recipe required. Bring your grandmother's recipe. Bring the thing from the corner store. Bring something you haven't made in years because you forgot who you were making it for. Bring yourself.
THE BIRTHDAY PART
I'll be honest: I don't love being the center of attention.
But I've spent 40 years learning that receiving is also a practice. So I'm letting this community celebrate with me — not for me.
You don't need to bring a gift. You already are one. Donate, it's enough.
WHAT TO BRING
• Something to share from your culture (preferably in bite-sized pieces)
• Water + sun protection
• A blanket or mat for the picnic
• Comfortable clothes for hiking and movement
• An open heart and a story, if you want to share it
Open to all. Rooted in freedom. Rising together.
***PLEASE ROUTE YOUR CAR TO DON LORENZO & LA BREA!
DO NOT ENTER THE LA CIENEGA ENTRANCE OF KENNETH HAHN PARK OR YOU WILL MISS THE HIKE***
Hike to Yoga started with a simple idea: that when we heal in nature, we heal ourselves and each other. Today, it’s clear that environmental justice is inseparable from community care. Too many of our neighborhoods lack safe, healthy green spaces—just like ecosystems suffer when biodiversity is lost, people suffer when human diversity isn’t embraced. Hike to Yoga is about aligning people and the planet, building belonging through mindful hikes, yoga, and collective restoration. Our vision is to expand nationally, creating Peace Warrior hubs in every city with a park—because we believe healing is contagious, and together we can restore our land, our communities, and our humanity.
