UPDATE: A pre-hike revealed multiple trees across the trail from Tioga Bridge downriver to Bob Creek, so instead we will go upriver (the Tioga segment). There are fewer trees to step over and they are far easier to negotiate. Plus, views of the river are better here! This hike is all about the Archie Creek Fire which, in 2020, swept all up and down the North Umpqua Trail. It will take decades to fully recover but the recovery is indeed on the way. This hike is beautiful in spite of (or maybe because of) the fire and is a great way to see how Mother Nature returns to her former greatness. Plus, some of our old-time members can regale you with stories of what the trail was like way back when. Or, you can just walk faster and leave them behind!

Upon our return to the day use area, we will cross the North Umpqua Highway and do the short walk to Susan Creek Falls.

Difficulty level: Moderate
Distance: 4.0 miles to overlook and back, 5.5 miles with Susan Creek Falls added in.
Elevation gain: 500 feet
Pluses: A chance to observe a forest in wildfire recovery. The winter rains will have numerous creeks and waterfalls burbling and tumbling next to the trail. Susan Creek Falls will no doubt, have a high volume of water to delight observers and photographers alike.
Minuses: Some poison oak grows along the trail, particularly on the Susan Creek Falls portion. We may have to deal with winter weather. Boots can also get wet where small creeks run across the trail.
