In the 1900's African-Americans working on the east coast railway established Florida's first beach community for African-Americans during the period of segregation, formerly known as Manhattan Beach. Now known as Hanna Park, one of Jacksonville's most recognized and visited parks, the 450 acres include shoreline, a dune system and trails lined by live oaks draped in Spanish Moss. Many birds, alligators, foxes and sea turtles all reside in Hanna Park.

We will hike approximately three miles along the beautiful trails of Hanna Park. We'll also take a bit of a beach walk along the way. The trail is pretty narrow with some minor elevation changes.

If the Heat Index is too high, we'll shorten the distance or opt for a beach walk only.

Please bring a picnic lunch and join us afterwards for a meal together at the pavilion by the parking lot.

The Sierra Club and the YMCA of the USA have launched a national partnership focused on improving the health and well-being of former and current members of the military and their families through outdoor experiences. Studies prove the mental health benefits of participating in outdoor programs.

Restrooms available. Bring water and insect repellent. Please, no pets (Service dogs are OK). Kids capable of a three mile hike at an adult pace are welcome.

FEE will paid for you! No cost. There is a $5.00 admission fee per carload to enter the park (Military ID Card gives you 50% off). That will be paid for you.

DIRECTIONS: To get to the park located at 500 Wonderwood Dr, Jacksonville, 32233, take Monument Rd east from I-295, then turn right on McCormick/Wonderwood until you come to the park entrance at the intersection Wonderwood Dr and Old Mayport Rd.

We will meet in the Beach Access Parking Lot 8, 0.6 miles past the entrance station.

After entering the park, proceed straight. You will pass a green sign for Lots 6 and 7. Continue to the next stop sign and turn left. Go straight up to the Parking Lot #8 by the beach.

After the hike, you can take full advantage of Hanna Park by strolling the beach, renting a kayak or canoe, or riding the biking trails.

If you are a Veteran group who would like to discuss a private hike for your group (Yep, that is free too!) or if you have any questions, please email Tammy at [email protected].

Please register on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/sierra-club-northeast-florida-group/events/285066636/
