Discover Bristol's best kept secret; The Lord Mayor's Chapel. This truly remarkable medieval chapel has been a place of sanctuary at the heart of the city for 800 years. Join a dedicated tour guide as they take you on a journey of history, heritage and architecture at the heart of the city. The Lord Mayor’s Chapel is the only remaining building of the Hospital of Saint Mark. When it was built c.1230 it was connected to the Abbey of St Augustine, known today as Bristol Cathedral. The hospital provided food and care for 100 people every day. Along with the Abbey of St Augustine, it closed in 1539 when Henry VIII broke away from the Roman Catholic Church to form the Church of England. In 1722 The Lord Mayor’s Chapel became the official place of worship of the Lord Mayor of Bristol and has remained so ever since. Since 2023 Bristol Cathedral has cared for the Chapel.
The tour lasts between 45-60 minutes, and your guide will meet you inside The Lord Mayor's Chapel.
Two ticket types are available - one that includes both an Annual Pass and a guided tour, and one for just a guided tour (to be used if you already have an Annual Pass). You must have both an Annual Pass and a guided tour ticket.
There are seven steps down into the main entrance of The Lord Mayor's Chapel. Level access (via a side street and a ramp) can be arranged, but please let the host know in advance. Some areas of the Chapel included in the highlights tours involve uneven floors and steps. Sensible footwear is advised.
