In his fifth collaboration with director Spike Lee, Denzel Washington plays David King, a music mogul living on top of the world in a gorgeously appointed penthouse in a trendy neighborhood in Brooklyn. With the supposed “best ears in the business,” he has built a media empire for his wife Pam (Ilfenesh Hadera, Deception) and their teen son Trey (Aubrey Joseph, Cloak & Dagger). Approached by a massive conglomerate who want to buy Stackin’ Hits Records out from under him, David is concerned about the loss of the label’s identity if the deal goes through and starts gathering cash to buy back a controlling interest. But at the worst possible time, he gets entangled in a bungled kidnapping plot when the son of his chauffer and closest confidante, Paul (Jeffrey Wright) gets grabbed and held for ransom instead of Trey. What will he choose to sacrifice: the record label he’s spent his life building, or his closest relationship and possibly the life of his friend’s son?
Highest 2 Lowest, a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low, manages to expand on Lee’s familiar interests in racial and class politics, social commentary, cinema history, and one particular borough of New York City, while still bringing a fresh perspective to issues of wealth concentration and artistic authenticity.
