Traditional high tea meets an afternoon of Gaeilge in the heart of Woodlawn.
Join us at The Burren Public House & Tearoom for a special Sunday combining a traditional high tea service with a Pop-Up Gaeltacht: an informal, welcoming opportunity to hear, practice, and use the Irish language over tea, food, and conversation.
Whether you are fluent, just beginning, or know only a handful of phrases, you are welcome. Guests will be encouraged to order as Gaeilge, practice conversation with our staff, and use whatever Irish they have. There is no test, no required level of proficiency, and no need to worry about making mistakes. The point is simply to use the language together.
The High Tea Service — $20 per person
Each guest will receive a full traditional-style tea service featuring a pot of tea, finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones served with preserves and cream, and a selection of small cakes, pastries, and sweets, presented on a classic tiered tea service.
We’ll have Irish-language menus, useful phrases, and plenty of opportunities to put your Gaeilge into practice while you eat.
And because no Gaeltacht is sustained by tea alone: order a sneaky pint (or two) in Irish and we’ll take $1 off each one. Just ask as Gaeilge.
12:00 PM Seating — High Tea + Gaeilge for the Irish Language Mass
Guests attending the 12:00 PM seating will also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with common Irish responses and phrases that may be useful at the AOH Irish Language Mass taking place at 2:30 PM at St. Barnabas Church.
This is intended as a relaxed introduction rather than a formal language lesson, so complete beginners are very welcome.
Please note: The Burren is not affiliated with or an organizer of the AOH Irish Language Mass. We do, however, believe in the importance of preserving living culture, and think that the afternoon offers a perfect opportunity to get people speaking and hearing some Irish beforehand.
4:00 PM Seating — High Tea + Pop-Up Gaeltacht
Our 4:00 PM seating will focus on high tea and conversation. Come in, meet other Irish speakers and learners, practice ordering and chatting as Gaeilge, and help turn the Tearoom into a little piece of the Gaeltacht for the afternoon.
You don't have to speak Irish to come. You just have to be willing to give it a go.
