For the occasion of the Our Ocean Conference 2024 in Athens, the High Seas Alliance has installed a giant octopus tentacle with a message to governments attending the confererence to Ratify the High Seas Treaty Now!
The 8-meter-high inflatable orange tentacle represents the octopus mascot (affectionately known as Octavia) that the High Seas Alliance and its partners are using for their #RaceForRatification campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of the High Seas Treaty and the need for at least 60 countries to ratify it by the UN Ocean Conference in June 2025, France, so it can enter into force and enable the global community to start stepping up ocean protections.
The new Treaty will help protect marine life in two-thirds of the ocean and marks a historic and pivotal moment in the fight against the biodiversity and climate crises. To date, three governments (Palau, Chile and Belize) have officially deposited their ratifications at the UN, with Seychelles poised to do so soon, now that its ratification process has been finalized nationally.
