Presented by Jorke Grotenhuis, Postdocoral scholar, University of California, Berkeley
Hieroglyphic sign lists have been a staple of modern Egyptology since the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script and are known to most Egyptologists as very beneficial tools. In this lecture, Grotenhuis presents a short history of sign lists, up to and including the development of the Thot Sign List (TSL). Some of the issues encountered during hieroglyphic research will be explored, along with an introduction to the TSL and how the work has progressed since its launch in 2019. Current work being done to prepare a hieroglyphic extension in Unicode will then be discussed, including a discussion of control characters used for the arrangement of signs in a two-dimensional space, as well as a look at a high number of new characters.
Registration is for in-person attendance only. This free lecture will also be live-streamed on the OI YouTube channel.
