DESCRIPTION:
The Port River estuary has many hidden treasures. This event will explore a couple. Hidden Creek which runs under the powerlines is paddle-able at certain tides only. Some days when the tide drops too low and there is no water in the creek. On days of extreme tides the current flowing into or out of the creek can be very hazardous.
On the day selected in the morning conditions should be OK to explore Hidden Creek all the way to the embankment wall....I hope! Last time I tried this we ran out of water and it was a muddy affair! Hidden Creek is a beautiful mangrove zone with lots of twists and turns to sharpen up your turning skills.
After exploring the creek we will paddle to the Ships Graveyard where many historic relics are to be viewed. Each of the ships abandoned there has it's own unique story and website; to read more see: Garden Island Ships Graveyard.
We then head for the main part of the Port River for lunch on the nice lawn area in front of the Girl Guides Hall at Snowden's Beach.
Then return to Garden Island.
The distance to be travelled may vary based on how far into Hidden Creek we can navigate.
You'll need a touring or sea kayak, paddling gear to suit the weather and lunch.
The distance vs time equation for this one can be deceiving...navigating the creek is a slow process.
Note that ratios/quotas will apply, depending on the number of Instructors or Leaders on a trip. We may take pictures of the trip and mention your name on our website. If you have any concerns about this, let the trip leader know.
