On the Saturday morning Hill Street carpark encampment will see an array of military and vintage vehicles arriving for a 10am start including a full size replica Hurricane and Spitfire, military displays from lots of nations in the fight against the dark side, military vehicles, classic cars and lots more. Back by popular demand this year we have the Yanks here with a full weapons display on how we can keep the enemy at bay. All this to the back drop of Dapper Dan DJ spinning the vinyl with some great tunes.
Wave the Evacuees off thanks to the East Lancashire Railway Heywood Station after 9:45am and their return from the country (OK, Ramsbottom!) at 11:59am, where they will be allocated a “willing” adult to stay with before they all jump on the Vintage Buses just in time for the parade and their attendance at our Annual Street Party!
Don't forget to line the streets for the Town’s Official Armed Forces Day Parade, leaving from The Heywood Reform Club, Tower Street, Heywood, at 1300 hours prompt. Leading with the official standards, Veterans and Cadets alike will be marching along with the Pipes and Drums Band around the town and returning to The Heywood Reform Club. Any vintage/military vehicles or persons wanting to join the parade are very much welcome to do so and should be there for direction from 12:15pm.
Stalls and a children’s vintage fairground rides and Punch & Judy, will be this year be on the Civic Centre Carpark due to its renovation. Whilst across the road at St Luke's church , their NAAFI is open 12-5pm and the usual 1940s Day Concert kicking off at 12:15pm with music from The Big Swinging Thing and the rest leading on from 1:30pm after the parade. With acts including Heykids, Sign along with us , Tracing Steps, VOICE and music, instruments, dance and acting from the era with talent from our very own Town, it's a full packed, entertaining show for all the family, pick a deck chair on the lawn of St Luke's and enjoy.
Experience the Air Raid shelters over at Mike Goldrick Blinds & Curtains, inside Tilly's Tea Room as they perform hourly Air Raids (12pm, 1:50pm & 3pm), with their Home Guard and unexploded bomb display. Open all day for selfies and music to dance along to with A-Train Swings, Wingtip Windy DJing from 11am.
Kavanagh and Coates are joining the celebrations this year, with a packed carpark of activities including vintage singer, face painter, candy cart, afternoon tea and Gun Carriage and Horses on display for a fantastic photo opportunity.
Mission Street will be hosting our annual Street Party, after the Evacuees return home, from 2pm they enjoy a party of sandwiches, cake and arts and crafts to send home to their families!
Heywood Magic Market have Rachel Grace, the Skylark of Vintage inside preforming sets at 12:15pm, 1:45pm and 2:45pm. For the bigger kids in the family, outside on their carpark you’ll find their usual funfair rides ready to go.
Don't forget to pop into all the charity shops in the town if you're looking for a vintage bargain as they all have lots of offer.
If dancing to the classic tunes of the era, is your thing, then once again join Lille de Carlo singing at the Annual Tea Dance at Trinity Methodist Heywood, tickets can be bought on the day, just have a wander down.
Throughout the day and well into the evening, everyone can enjoy the joys of the pubs of Heywood, who are all making preparations for some fun times. The Olde Queen Anne has there Garden Stage up with Jake Owens & Tom Fernandez followed by The Jackson Kay Band and going in to the early evening Jack Carroll. The Dressers Arms Heywood Heywood have Marina Mae at 2pm followed by Joe Matthews and DJ and The Kings will have live entertainment planned from late afternoon, and well into the evening. While Imli Restaurant will open from 12pm, also serving food and drink. Pop down to any of these fab venues to finish off your day with a cold drink and sit down.
