Starting outside the Unitarian Church at 1a Ponsonby Road and ending at St Kevins Arcade, 183 Ponsonby Road.This walking tour celebrates the lesbian and many LGBTQ+ spaces and community places on and around K’Rd. These spaces were at the forefront of what has been described as ‘the golden era’ of Auckland’s nightlife and club scene that centred on K’Rd amongst a vibrant and dynamic subculture during the 1990s. And many community organisations important to our diverse communities based themselves on K’Rd to be close to who they were advocating and working for. Discover the era before gentrification of nearby gaybourhoods Grey Lynn and Ponsonby and before K’Rd’s seedy, wild reputation got cleaned up.
Hear about safe spaces, sometimes the only safe space where past generations of our communities could be their authentic selves and where able to survive and thrive. By sharing their stories you will meet an unapologetic radical community of beautiful, handsome, diverse, political, loud and proud queer lesbian womxn, women, womyn who came before and live with us in our diverse lesbian communities.
We know that if we do not actively document the heritage of the spaces, places and venues frequented by our communities they will disappear without a trace, the memory of them gone and forgotten. This is true for all queer heritage – the stories need to be unearthed, then constantly told, and retold, acknowledged and enjoyed. The Herstory Walking Tour of K’Rd celebrates who we were, where we played and what we did, as well as our personal and collective spirit and honours those who came before.
