The Hershey Cubs will be wearing Mental Health inspired jerseys during both games against the Connecticut Jr. Rangers. During both games, jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds going to charity.
NAMI Central PA will have a table set up with resources and giveaways and will be speaking at intermission.
Youth and young adults are experiencing a mental health crisis and mental health issues continue to be stigmatized in the world of sports, especially for male athletes. Some reasons for this include the masculinity value of sport, the violent contact in many sports, and the overall stigma of mental health in society as a whole. Many athletes prefer to stay silent about their mental health struggles, worrying that they may be seen as weak if they seek out help.
We must recognize the significant impact of these experiences on young people’s mental health—and the importance of providing the education, care and support they need. Together, we can do make a difference - together, we can Stomp Out Stigma!
NAMI Central PA (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization that serves residents in Dauphin and Lebanon Counties in central Pennsylvania. NAMI Central PA offers free mental health education classes, support, resources, suicide prevention, and advocacy.
The Hershey Cubs Hockey Club, founded by longtime NHL head coach Bruce Boudreau, is a junior hockey team in the United States Premier Hockey League. The team aims to be a contributing member of the community, volunteering, supporting local charities, and giving back in any way they can. They hope to teach the participating young men to be the best player they can be on the ice and the best person off the ice.
