Africatown Heritage House is hosting its second 2024 Heritage Lecture Series event, a bimonthly collection of speeches designed to touch on topics related to the Black experience. Dr. Kern Jackson will present his lecture entitled “Resistance, Resilience, and Survival": Dreams of Alabamians in Africa on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 5:30pm.
From Dr. Jackson: "What happens when you trace the road of those enslaved? What can one learn about the history and culture of West Africa and the legacy and impact of the transatlantic slave trade? Through this lecture, guests will gain a contemporary glimpse at collective memory through an excursion to Accra and Keta, Ghana; Lome and Ahneo, Togo; and Ouidah, Benin. Come and gain a deeper understanding of slavery and the slave trade in West Africa and its impact on modern-day Africa. We will also have the chance to interact with local communities and organizations that are working to preserve their heritage, promote their development, and fight against injustice. Moreover, we will be able to brainstorm ideas on where to go from here: how to address the challenges and opportunities that face Africa today, how to foster solidarity and cooperation among African countries, the diaspora and friends, and how to build a better future for themselves and others."

Dr. Jackson is the Director of the African American Studies Program at the University of South Alabama. He specializes in African American and Southeastern United States folklore and oral narrative. He is also the co-writer and co-producer of the award-winning documentary "Descendant" (dir. Margaret Brown, 2022). "Descendant" follows members of Africatown as they share their personal stories and community history as descendants of the Clotilda. The ship’s existence, a centuries-old open secret, is confirmed by a team of marine archeologists. The film explores implications of the Clotilda’s discovery for the descendants, who grapple with their heritage while claiming the power to shape their own destinies.

The History Museum of Mobile and Africatown Heritage House invite the public to attend this FREE Heritage Lecture Series. Capacity is limited and guests are required to RSVP to attend by calling (251) 206-5268.
