Heritage Happy Hour: Butter

Heritage Happy Hour is a convivial “no-host” gathering of heritage professionals, young preservationists, aficionados, friends, and Legacy Business cohorts interested in safeguarding San Francisco’s unique architectural and cultural identity. We get together on the Second Thursday of each month from 5-7 pm at a registered Legacy Business bar in San Francisco.

The Butter Bar & Restaurant (www.smoothasbutter.com) was created by brothers Carlton and Chris Solle, who were two of San Francisco’s top house music promoters and leaders in the emerging electronic music and dance industry.

During their nightlife-promoting efforts, they developed the concept for a cozy theme bar that would be a home to the city’s nightlife community and for the industry’s DJs, promoters and producers to have a place they could call their own.

The brothers rallied promoters and artists to invest and support their bar concept in hopes of creating San Francisco’s first DJ House-Bar, solely dedicated to promoting the house-techno sound. Butter was financed through a crowd-funding campaign decades before the term and concept were ever coined. Because it was funded by the best actors in the dance-music community, it became the informal home for the growing industry.

The brothers purchased Bee’s Kitchen, a long time Chinese restaurant, and secured a long-term lease under the name Pure Entertainment LLC. Since 2009, Vlad Cood had been Butter’s operator and primary shareholder.

Butter, voted the #1 Party Bar in San Francisco, is known for tasty home-cooked selections just like your babysitter used to make. Utilizing multiple microwaves, its trailer chef is capable of preparing a dazzling array of dishes skillfully prepared using just the right power settings and timing sequences. Butter also serves only the freshest Pabst Blue Ribbon with a wide selection of other 16 oz. tallboy canned beers.

Butter was added to the Legacy Business Registry on May 13, 2019.
