This Lecture Series is developed in association with the Hereafter exhibition (on view from May 31 – August 24, 2024) at Contemporary Craft. The program explores diverse approaches to grief, mourning and celebrating life. It delves into how various societies and traditions navigate these emotional landscapes, highlighting unique rituals, ceremonies, and practices that foster healing and understanding within communities. By sharing various perspectives, the series aims to illuminate the universal themes of loss and remembrance while showcasing the richness and diversity of human responses to life’s transition.

Lecture Series II: Death Machine and The Speed of Grief

In this lecture, we will explore how the business of death operates in modern times and the impact it has had on our nature to grieve and process loss. We will discuss how alienation and the speed of progress have contributed to a disconnect from the deceased and how individuals are often rushed through the grieving process. Join us as we delve into the complexities of death in a fast-paced world and consider how we can reclaim our intimacy with the deceased and honor the process of grief.


Speaker: Ricardo iamuuri Robinson

Ricardo iamuuri Robinson is an interdisciplinary sound recordist, composer, and visual artist exploring acoustic ecologies and the relationship between humans and their environment through sound. His work emphasizes the listener's role as composer, highlighting how sound shapes our experiences based on bias and geography. Utilizing various mediums, Robinson tells the story of sound, impacting our perception of time and place. Through research, field recordings, and creative listening engagements, he invites listeners to reflect on their sense of place and awareness, and encourages a deeper engagement with the sociopolitical dimensions of sound. Each location on Earth holds unique stories within its soundscapes.
