Swing North is thrilled to invite you to our first ever weekend in Manchester, at the end of August. We're buzzing like bees (the symbol of Manchester) to share with you some of our favourite musicians, and a choice of classes that you can pick and mix, to suit your level and taste. We've lined up a distinctly northern bunch of musicians and teachers, including some friends from Lancaster, Leeds, Calderdale and Liverpool. We're bringing our old friends Cat & Niomi back to the North of England (currently exiled to London & Copenhagen), and we're welcoming back our new friend, Corina Kwami.
Tip: Don't try to do everything! We want you to have a fun weekend, save some energy for our parties, and have a chance to see some of our vibrant city. It's not cheating to allow some chill time in the morning, or to cherry pick a handful of classes.
SWING NORTH MEMBERS enjoy a £24 discount*. Ask us for the coupon code.
* New members are always welcome, however members claiming this discount, are expected to maintain their membership for at least 3 months either prior to, or following the event.
VENUES
Friday night's welcome party will be in Swing North's regular venue, a cool basement below Whitworth Locke hotel.
Our main venue for the rest of the weekend, is the Hallé St. Peter's rehearsal facility; in a beautifully converted church in the former warehouse district of Ancoats. The location overlooks a piazza, surrounded by cafes, bars and restaurants. Some classes will be in nearby St. Michael's, which is on the next street along.
UNDERSTANDING LEVELS
Above all, we ask you to be honest with yourself. The level indicator for each class is for guidance, with the aim of grouping together dancers of a similar experience level. If you're a fast learner, we're happy for you to try progressing up a level through the weekend, but please don't then assume that this translates to your level for all future events. It's a good habit to always consider dropping back down a level, especially at larger events.
As a rough guide...
BASICS You're a beginner in this dance style, and may have already taken a class or two. Our Basics classes will help with your basic understanding of the dance style, to put the footwork into your muscle memory, giving you the confidence to also join this weekend's Improver level classes.
IMPROVER You're fully familiar with the basic shapes and footwork patterns, and are keen to further explore concepts such as lead and follow.
IMPROVER+ You've been taking Improver classes for a while now, and are growing ever more curious about things like musicality, styling and variations; while remaining hungry for a greater understanding of the fundamentals.
INTERMEDIATE You've now realised that knowing a load of flashy moves, doesn't necessarily make you a great dancer, and are really keen to revisit the fundamentals, while having the confidence and competence to learn new shapes and variations at an increased pace of learning.
INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED You may be teaching some classes locally, you travel regularly to dance events, and have taken many classes from internationally recognised teachers.
ELEF = Everybody Leads, Everybody Follows.
Classes marked as ELEF will give each participant equal time to try the class content in each role. Attendees should have some previous experience of learning and dancing in both roles, and dance at least one role to an intermediate level.
See the dedicated page on our website for more info, including how to book individual parties or classes...
