Henri Matisse: The Decade That Shook the Art World
About this Event
Henri Matisse’s Femme au Chapeau remains a breakout work of modernism, an icon at SFMOMA, and an inspiration to generations of artists. When it debuted at the 1905 Salon d’automne, Matisse and his colleagues were derided as Fauves (wild beasts) who broke the basic rules of art. Learn more about the genesis of this groundbreaking work of art, the Stein family who bought it and brought it to San Francisco, and what Matisse did for an encore in the decade that shook the art world.
